Two industry-appropriate standards exist and can be used stand-alone or combined.
The first, Responsible Care®, has been in existence since 1988 and was launched by the American Chemistry Council (ACC). By means of an industry-wide framework comprising guiding principles and codes of management practices, companies use Responsible Care® as a tool to improve the responsible management of chemicals.
The second standard is the international standard for environmental management systems (ISO 14001). It was launched by the International Standard Organization in 1996 and has since been adopted by more than 100 countries (including the U.S.) as their national standard for environmental management.
